Meet the Artist

Artist, Sara Riches

My name is Sara Riches, and I’m an Aboriginal Artist and Muralist living and working on Whadjuk Noongar Country in Perth, Western Australia. I was born in Kalgoorlie, and my creative practice is deeply connected to the cultural heritage of my ancestral lands. On my father’s side, I'm Wangkatja and Esperance Nyungar, and on my mother’s side, Ngadju, Gubrun and Mirning. Through my work, I honour and share the stories, traditions, and spirit of these rich and enduring cultures.

I grew up across Norseman, Esperance, and Kalgoorlie, where I was fortunate to learn from my Elders and experience culture firsthand. From a young age, my culture was shared with me on Country by my grandmothers on both sides of my family. Sitting with them; listening, observing, learning which shaped my identity and ignited my lifelong connection to art and storytelling.

A vital part of my life and practice is returning to Country to strengthen and continue my cultural connection with family and Country. Being on Country grounds my spirit, deepens my cultural knowledge, and continually inspires the stories, symbols, and teachings that flow into my artwork. Connection is at the heart of everything I create; connection to Country, to community, and to each other. My artwork often explores themes of belonging, identity, and intergenerational knowledge. Collaboration is also a key part of my journey, and I feel privileged to work with schools, organisations, and communities to create murals and public artworks that bring people together and reflect shared stories.

Each piece I create is more than just an artwork; it’s an invitation to connect, reflect, and celebrate the strength and beauty of Aboriginal culture.

If you’d like to learn more about my work or collaborate on a project, I’d love to hear from you.
